Leave All Thoughts To The Thinking Mind

‘But the thinking mind says this, but the thinking mind says that’, you tell me. Why don’t you understand that the thinking mind is Satan and that there is no benefit to be had from listening to it? Who cares what Satan says? Was there ever a time that Satan didn’t lie? Why be interested in what a liar says? Why would you take Satan so very seriously, more seriously than anything else in the whole wide world?

Satan isn’t the red guy with horns, a pointy tail and a pitchfork, Satan is your everyday thoughts. Satan is that voice in your head – the voice in your head that never shuts up. Why else would he be called Shaitan the Whisperer? Why else would he be known as the Great Deceiver, the Father of Lies? Leave the Whisperer to his infernal whispering, the Deceiver to his deceiving, the Father of Lies to his own poisonous lies.

Deception belongs to the deceiver, lies to the liar – don’t enter into that circle! Don’t fall for it, don’t rise to the bait. ‘But, but, but…’ you say, ‘but the thinking mind says this, the thinking mind says that…’ Straightaway you invoke Satan, as if Satan can save you from Satan! Satan will promise to save you from all evil, he will promise you anything you want, but what of it? Are the promises of the Great Deceiver worth anything? Is the advice of the Great Liar something you should be following?

Satan isn’t really the red fellow with horns and feet like a goat. That’s just a story by which we are deceived. That’s the externalization. How much easier it would be if this were the case! How simple things would be then. How very convenient this would be. Satan isn’t convenient however – he is very inconvenient, the most inconvenient thing of all. Religion can’t save us from Satan either because religion comes from our thinking and our thinking is Satan. You must fight against the devil and all his works we are told, but all fighting comes from our thoughts, all fighting comes from the divisions with make with our mind. The rational approach can’t save us either therefore – rationality is the source of our neuroticism, not its cure. Rationality is the Dark Father who eats his own children. CBT can’t save us either therefore because CBT is also Satan, because CBT is also the Dark Father…

Fighting and striving come from our notions of right and wrong, good and evil and ‘good and evil’, ‘right and wrong’ are the categories of thought. Outside of thought there are no categories. Outside of thought there is no right and no wrong. Outside of thought there is nothing to fight against. To fight against Satan is to make Satan stronger, as the mystics always say. To fight against the Demon Sticky Hair is to get stuck to him all the more; when we try to strike the Tar Baby or pushing him away from us we get drawn into his embrace all the more. ‘Desired separation forges a connection’, says Douglas Flemons. What we least want we always get.

Satan is created by resistance; Satan is our resistance. Thought is resistance. If you want to be free from Satan then don’t rise to the bait. Don’t fall for it. If you want to be saved from Satan then don’t pay heed to his tricks, don’t listen to his whispering. Don’t ask for him to save you. Don’t keep quoting his lies to yourself and holding them close as if they were Nuggets of Sacred Truth. Don’t look to rationality to help you – don’t look for its guidance. If you want to be released from the Prison of Thinking then you must leave all thoughts to the thinking mind…

In order to write some things, one needs a good and quite long groundwork, one must have paid the require price before saying these things. For example; if I were to write; ‘free me of myself’.

There is or should be a ‘good’ background or ‘home-work’ before one could/should say such a thing. One should be entirely fed up with oneself. One must know enough of oneself that it simply cannot endure being oneself anymore.

To ‘know oneself’ means different things to different people, if there is one thing which has depth, it is this knowing oneself. Horizontally, it is selves, the multitude of selves, but vertically it is self, this same bless/curse self for all. Similar to an onion, it has multiple layers and it takes a life time to explore a few of these layers. For most people, who they are, what they are has to do with the ‘first’ layer, the outer skin of the onion. This is the self as it appears to others and from others to ourselves, it is the self as it ‘belongs’ to the culture in which it was fortunately/unfortunately born into. Different context, different causes and conditions makes up a different self. And all of this is still quite superficial; the outer skin of the onion. The ‘visible’ aspect of our onion has something to do with the fact that it is ‘visible’, if one would wish to get to the heart of this onion, one would need to seek inwardly where this visibility is being considerably diminish, layers after layers. Self isn’t an onion, and as such, there are no short cuts, you cannot split self in two in order to expose its rotten heart.

One of those ‘deeper’ layers clearly shows that we mostly are all a battlefield; a constant battle is raging within ourselves, a battle where the army by which I fight is not distinguishable from the army that I fight against; they are not two, and yet not one either. The constant ‘humming’, turmoil, contradiction, opposite tendencies of our thoughts kind of being a ‘pressure valve’ opening up, letting go some of that tension or pressure. As the battle rage within with no clear winner or loser in sight, without even knowing who are the good guys and the bad guys, tension increases sometimes dramatically and our quite chaotic thoughts are a direct consequence of this inner battle/battlefield. The protagonists within are not visible, they have no names for each other or even for the self. We (our thoughts/self/consciousness) have absolutely no way of knowing what is going on ‘down there’, but do know that something is going on within, over which we have no control at all. The battle rages and there is absolutely nothing at all one can do. Having/being this ‘background’ and we all do, we go on trying to do our best with the disastrous consequences that we see every single day of our life. This unresolved inner conflict spills over in our thoughts and in what we call our ‘real’ life. Consciousness acts as a buffer or bulwark without much success I must say. That spilling over is our way of behaving, thinking, relating with each other’s and even as self towards that self. One may think that he or she is a good, moral/ethical person, but look at the way we behave, relate one to each other; mistreating, mistrusting, smiling faces with a knife in hand just ready to hit our target. We may say something and think the opposite, our hearts are full of jealousy, envy, greed, competition, complete indifference, manipulative tactics… the list is quite long, so long that to truly see oneself as we truly are is such a vision of horror, that very few can take the shock that come with this quite unique sudden honest ‘view’.

The word meditation (the Christian interpretation of) means ‘to beg on one’s knees’, but what is it one begs/’should beg’ for? Well, it depends no? It depends on just how deep you know yourself, and as you reach some of those deeper layers, one begins to prays, one prays to be free from oneself. When those words resonate deeply with our unfiltered actual situation of self as it truly is, only then can liberation comes, of self finally free of self. The thinking mind ‘previous’ main purpose of filtering, buffering things out in order to protect and maintain the status quo of the self comes to an end. It is no so much the thinking mind that comes to an end, as it is its previous main and sole purpose in life.

In the meantime, our world, just as ourselves will remain as they always have been; at war.

Please, I beg you, free me of my self!

“Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,
there is a field. I’ll meet you there.

When the soul lies down in that grass,
the world is too full to talk about.
Ideas, language, even the phrase ‘each other’
    doesn’t make any sense.”
